Feature Friday: Weight Loss Recap

Hey guys!

I have officially lost 8 pounds! That is 2 pounds away from my goal! I’ve been wanted to write a post on my weight loss for a while now, but honestly haven’t had the time until now, whew! I am so excited to share more in-depth details on what I have been up to!

How I started:

It all started at the end of summer when I realized that I did not lose the weight I planned on losing that summer. In fact, I put on a few pounds! It was time to make small changes in my diet.

In the beginning:

I was not seeing results. I cut back on nearly all of my favorite “bad” foods (cookies, brownies, chips & salsa, deep-fried things…) and tried replacing them with “better” foods. This worked for a while but it just wasn’t enough. I began going to the gym daily for that extra push and still didn’t see the results I wanted. Slowly but surly I was losing about a half pound a week.

What I did at the gym:

  • Cardio pretty much everyday
  • Ab workouts twice a week
  • Zumba 🙂

How  I “count calories”:

From what I have learned, they key to counting calories is to keep it as general as possible meaning, DO NOT COUNT EVERY FREAKING CALORIE YOU EAT. That will just make you crazy. Instead, I keep a journal (or sometimes I just make a mental note) with a general guess on my meals. I will set a limit of how many calories I can consume and then I’ll try to follow it. Some meals I’ll go over the calorie limit but that’s okay. I think it’s more important to acknowledge the amount of calories that are in your diet.

What I’ve learned about weight loss:

  • Exercising everyday can actually be fun
  • Take exercise classes that you enjoy
  • Count calories (as mentioned above)
  • Be patient, it may take time but it is totally worth the weight wait! 😛

I have learned so much over the past few months that I am so thankful for. Obvisously, I thank you guys for always encouraging me to try harder and be my best or maybe even encouraging me to let go sometimes and be patient. Either way, I am thankful! 😀

Shopping Cart & Weight Loss Update

Hi guys!

Wow, I was cracking up at the comments on my last post. I am so happy that I’m not the only one who has made a stupid mistake like that! You guys are great.

Friday’s small trip to the store:

More frozen Kashi meals ON SALE! Yeah baby, $2.99 each. The Mayan Harvest Bake is my absolute favorite. I’ve had a few of the other frozen vegan meals by Kashi but the Mayan is just fantastic (Tara, you know what I’m talking about!). It may not look like the picture on the box when it comes out of the oven but you won’t even know the difference.

Weight Loss

My goal to lose five more pounds by Thanksgiving is actually going pretty well. Last week, I lost one pound which means that I am 3 pounds away from my goal! I’ve only been going to the gym about three times a week so this is pretty impressive for me. Especially considering my new love for donut baking! 😉 This week is going to be insane with three exams, 1 paper due, and working nearly 40 hours. Also, I have a ton of pressure on me right now because of my grades. Hopefully this past week of nothin’ but studying will pay off!

Calorie Counting

I have two main goals for November.

The first goal is to work on my calorie counting.

Today marks the last day of my 6 week weight loss challenge. As I’ve mentioned before, the weight is coming off very slow. I did lose 3 pounds in the 6 weeks which is a lot less than I expected but I am still trying. My excuse? Life happened. I got busy, big deal. I know I could have done a lot better but I had to prioritize. Anyway, I am starting to count calories (yuck) and figure out what is going on in my body.

Yesterday I actually ate one serving of pasta.

Such a small plate at 375 calories. Before, I would have ate twice this much and only thought it was only a 450 calorie meal. To my surprise, this was actually filling. I didn’t feel “full” but I did feel like I was satisfied.

With that said, my next goal is to lose 5 more pounds by Thanksgiving.

If I can lose the last 4-5 pounds, I will have officially lost the 10 pounds I’ve gain this year (I lost 2-3 pounds before the challenge started)! In these last couple months of getting back in shape, I have realised that I never want to get back off track ever again! It’s too easy to fall into bad habits. Cleaning up the habits takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

I just wanted to stop in and say…

T H A N K   Y O U ! ! !

The comments and support on my last post was incredible. I am so thankful for each and every one of you!

I have learned that it may take time to lose a few pounds, and that’s ok. I actually lost a half of a pound last week after my post! So, at least I didn’t look extremely dumb at the weigh-in. I also learned that I might not be consuming enough calories that I need for all of the exercise I have doing, I am going to work on this!

I have been extremely busy with life right now to put together well thought out posts. I cannot believe that VEGAN MO FO has been going on for almost a week and I haven’t posted anything. I seriously waited all year for this blogging event and now- I’ve got nothing! I’ll probably be posting a few meals here and there but I cannot promise any recipes anytime soon.

Well except ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH HUMMUS because it won the hummus contest. So look forward for that within the next week or two!

A Day in the Life of a Weight Loss Challenge Participant

Hello!

Quick update, (yes, it is 4:50 AM and I’m about to BLOG!)

The first day of the Weight Loss challenge (WLC) went very good! I started the day off with a 4 mile walk with some of the girls at my gym. We left the gym at about 6:50 AM and returned a little after 8AM. The walking group is a great diverse group of strong women ranging from ages 20 (hey, that’s me!) to mid 80s, isn’t that cool? I hope that 60+ years from now I can be as strong and fit as these ladies! After the walk, I headed off to my long day of classes.

After classes, homework, miscellaneous housework and market prep, I was back at the gym. This time for the “hard Zumba class” (that’s what I’ll call it) at 5:30PM. First, I did my first weight-in. To my surprise, I actually already lost 3 pounds in two weeks! This is great but I hope I can still lose enough in the challenge! Did I mention first prize is $1,000???

My feet were already blistered and sore but this was not stopping me from doing a little extra of my favorite workout class. At 6:30PM,  the official WLC class started. From what I understood this was a core class, hence the name “Core Camp”. But no, not at all. We did a lot of lifting (we ran out of light weights so I got stuck with the 8 pounders) and cardio. So many girls signed up for the challenge, we barley had any room for cardio! I thought I was keeping up pretty good, the only thing hurting on me was my dang feet! My entire foot feels like a blister, ow!  Hundred of reps, jumping jacks, lunges, and swats later, it was core time! We did a lot of core work outs that I have never done before and I could totally feel it! My abs were on FIRE! I wish I would have pushed myself harder like I used to do in Pilates because my abs are not even sore,  b u m m e r !

Needless to say, I was pooped after my long day! I went to bed somewhere between 9:00-9:30PM and now I am up at 4:30AM for no reason. I woke up with tons of energy and don’t see myself going back to sleep in the near future. I was going to hit the gym around 6:30AM but I think my feet just might need a rest day!

Hello, Vegansunshine readers!  My name is Jess, and I blog over at In My Healthy Opinion.  I’m a vegan, lover of exercise, and my blog focuses on living a healthy life with people I love the most.

 

I’m so happy to be writing on Whitney’s blog today!  Vegansunshine is such a great blog; it’s full of great vegan recipe ideas and interesting tidbits about Whitney’s life (I especially love the Farmer’s Market recaps!).

Shortly after becoming vegan, I looked more into the products (beauty, household cleaning, etc.) I was using.  A lot of the information about eating for our planet/environment also discusses the importance of using natural products.  In using the natural stuff, you help the planet while avoiding toxic and harmful ingredients.  This is a hot topic lately, and one that’s still being heavily researched.

Since I’ve been learning a lot about natural products lately, I would like to share some tips/reasons why they’re important to use in our daily life.

  • You Are What You Wear:  I recently read Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Diet, and she says that if you wouldn’t eat or drink your lotion/oil you put on your skin, why would you slather it all over yourself?  Chemicals travel through your blood, and what’s put ON your body is absorbed into the body’s largest organ – the skin.  Make sure it’s as free from chemicals as possible.

Lately I’ve been using coconut oil on my face and body for moisture and skin care.  It’s supposedly really good for that; I’m still trying it out!

 

  • Diet:  We take so much time to eat right and exercise, but it’s almost cancelled out if we’re using harsh, chemical-filled beauty products.  When we don’t know the ingredients in food, it’s mostly best to avoid it.  Treat your skin like you would your diet – be selective and only use what’s natural!
    • Go To the Source: The Skin Deep Cosmetic Database is a great source to find out if your current products are okay.  The site gives each product a ranking, and then lists the not-so-good ingredients, as well as the ones that are pretty harmless.

     

These are just a few of the beauty products I’ve been using – Gabriel powder, Alba chapstick, Physician’s Formula mascara.

 

  • Just a Few:  Non-natural products can be anything from simple irritants to possibly being carcinogenic.  Here are just a few of the main ingredients to avoid in products: Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (often used in shampoos), Petrolatum, Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Parabens, Synthetic Colors and Fragrances, Propylene Glycol, among many more.  Visit this link of the 10 Toxic Cosmetic Ingredients to Avoid for more.

It’s really important to just be aware – not only what you eat/do/think, but also what you use on your skin and in your house.  The average person uses over 20+ products on a daily basis, and it does add up and make an impact on our health.  All of this isn’t’ meant to scare you, but just inform you of another positive thing you can do for your well-being.  Obsessing over every single ingredient isn’t necessary – just try to make some better choices here and there to create a more natural lifestyle!

Spring Cleaning & a RAW Review

Goals for this week:

  • Work on the core
  • Eat “cleaner” foods
  • Start my new Spring Cleaning program*

*I have noticed that heavy breads and meals that focus too much on processed carbs (which I shouldn’t be eating anyway) leave me feeling sluggish and weak. I want to try eliminating all foods that upset my body like wheat, sugar, caffeine, and processed anything(not like I haven’t said this before!) I guess I would consider this as somewhat as a detox, but not nearly as extreme. I’ve been talking about eating better for a while now but this time I have a plan.

So stay tuned for new healthy recipes!

!!!Review!!!

A few weeks ago I was sent a sample of ‘RAW protein powder’ from Garden of Life. I see this stuff everywhere but I was afraid to buy it because not only is it pretty expensive, I didn’t want to be stuck with a big tub of this protein powder if it didn’t even taste good.

The taste was pretty good compared to most protein powders. I really like the taste of raw protein powders. Very earthy without the chalky taste! Can’t beat that!

Not only did this stuff taste great, they sent me a $5 off coupon too! Thanks Garden of Life!
